World Cities Day 2024 is the seventh global celebration since the day it was launched on 31 October 2014 in Shanghai, China. Under the overarching theme of Better City, Better Life, the aim of the day is to focus the international community’s attention on urbanisation as a central issue for development and to encourage cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing urban challenges towards sustainable development.
The theme of World Cities Day 2024 is Valuing our communities and cities. The event presents an opportunity to engage in a global discussion after the official ceremony on the below four topics.
- Towards Africities: Achieving the SDGs through Resilient Intermediate Cities in Africa
- Working together to build sustainable cities and communities
- Building Back Better Communities through Public Space
- The World Cities Report 2024: The Value of Sustainable Urbanization
The Global Observance of World Cities Day will take place on the 31st of October with 4 Roundtable events.
Roundtable 1, Towards Africities: Achieving the SDGs through Resilient Intermediate Cities in Africa coorganized with UCLG-A and Council of Governors of Kenya, will by moderated by Billy Cobbett, Director of Cities Alliance.
