Metropolises and their inhabitants are still the drivers of innovation and growth and through sustainable development are key to building societies that are more inclusive, more accessible and more efficient.

In this context, for the first time in six years and in the framework of the Brussels Urban Summit 2024, the entire Metropolis community will get together in Brussels to celebrate the 14th Metropolis World Congress and address the major challenges facing the world's big cities and metropolises.

Smart City Expo Bogotá

Cities that care, cities that innovate

Smart City Expo Bogota, promoted by Fira Barcelona Internacional and driven by the leading international event Smart City Expo World Congress with the support of the Mayor's Office of Bogota, brings together experts in smart cities who will share ideas, knowledge and solutions on how to bring smart and sustainable development to cities and the people and communities that inhabit them.

Under the slogan Cities that Care, Cities that Innovate, the event aims to position cities as catalysts for the connection between the quality of life of their citizens and urban innovation. The programme is developed by linking urban agendas and Bogotá's current moment of promoting social inclusion, diversity, sustainability and care for its citizens, with the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation and technological innovations. This union highlights the importance of cities as connectors of innovations to combine people, knowledge and solutions for the development of our cities and territories.

Metropolitan Governance in Africa: Peer Learning of local experiences
To highlight the challenges that African cities face and how they are overcoming them, Metropolis and UCLG-Africa decided to design the launch of a Learning Program on “Metropolitan Governance in Africa”. Based on a pedagogical content designed by Metropolis, this learning program aims to introduce the metropolitan reality and how metropolitan governance with a gender perspective can be the key to face the challenges and threats that surround our metropolises.

Metropolitan Governance in Africa: Peer Learning of local experiences (22 February 2021)

During the session “Peer Learning From Local Experiences” city managers of different African cities and metropolises will participate in a peer review of their local experiences facing the challenges produced by the rapid urban growth and the COVID-19 pandemic, giving a particular mention to the role of digitalisation.

Webinar: Rethinking the future of public metropolitan spaces

Focusing on the future of public space can help build more resilient, quality and inclusive metropolitan spaces.

Based on the project ‘rethinking public space for a sustainable metropolitan future’ in partnership with Brussels-Capital Region, this webinar focuses on reimagining the future of public spaces.

Public spaces are the setting where people live, work, play and care for each other. The activities that take place in metropolitan spaces vary greatly from one person to another and change throughout the day. Ensuring access to adequate public and green spaces, services and infrastructure for all is key to creating thriving communities.

How can public spaces be inclusive?

Public spaces can reflect and support the diversity of needs of their residents. Streets, parks and plazas can be symbols of collective well-being, but can also be spaces of struggle and discontent. When public spaces are successful they nurture the idea of community and support physical and mental health by creating a network of safe and well-connected spaces.

How can cities develop quality public spaces that discourage gentrification?

Large-scale, high-profile public spaces have been associated with socially homogeneous neighbourhoods that create displacement. To strive towards just sustainable spaces local and metropolitan governments need to place people at the heart of decision-making and co-creation.
