High-Level Meeting on the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda

In collaboration with UN-Habitat, the President of the UN General Assembly will convene a high-level meeting in New York City on 28 April 2022 to assess the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, adopted at the Habitat III conference in 2016. The meeting will facilitate an ongoing exchange of experiences among the Member States, Local and Regional Governments, professional associations, grassroots organizations, and business leaders.

High-Level Meeting on the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda

In collaboration with UN-Habitat, the President of the UN General Assembly will convene a high-level meeting in New York City on 28 April 2022 to assess the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, adopted at the Habitat III conference in 2016. The meeting will facilitate an ongoing exchange of experiences among the Member States, Local and Regional Governments, professional associations, grassroots organizations, and business leaders.

Background

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 75/224 of December 2024, the President of the United Nations General Assembly will convene a one-day High-Level Meeting to assess progress of the implementation of the New Urban Agenda on Thursday 28 April 2022 at UN headquarters in New York.

The objectives of the meeting are to assess the progress in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and facilitate an ongoing exchange of experiences among Member States, Local and Regional Governments, and other constituencies of the New Urban Agenda such as professional associations, grassroots organisations, and business leaders.

Four key elements will inform the discussions at the High Level Meeting:

(1) The Quadrennial Report of the Secretary-General on progress in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda.

(2) Inputs based on deliberations of five regional forums for sustainable development, which will be made available to Member States by mid-April 2022;

(3) The summary of an ECOSOC special event, taking place on 21 April 2022, with two roundtables: one – on the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda, based on the 2022 Quadrennial Report of the Secretary-General, including how it is addressing rising equalities; second – on the UN systemwide strategy for sustainable urbanization to assist Member States in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda;

(4) Dedicated side events organized immediately prior to the High-Level meeting, on affordable housing, climate adaptation, business innovation, and local governments.

Format

The one-day High-Level Meeting will be held in the UN General Assembly hall from 10am to 1pm, and 3pm to 6pm EDT on 28 April 2022. The meeting will stream live-virtual, without any need for registration, on UN WebTv and UN Youtube.
